In 1895, the owners of Tuileries de Marseille commisioned a young talented potter from Aubagne, Louis Sicard, to create a faience gift. He chose the shape of a cicada because of its prevalence in Provence. At that time, cicadas were also popular with the writers and poets in the area.
Today, the cicada is believed to be a symbol of good luck and happiness. The wall vases are generally hung at an entrance or in the kitchen to bring joy, friendship and luck to the home. Just add a sprig of lavender to make a perfect gift!
