The name "sand dollar" is in reference to their round flat shape, which is similar to a large coin.  When they are living, they are covered in a suit of moveable spines that encompass the entire shell.  This is the skeleton of the sand dollar, which is related to that of the starfish and sea urchin.  They live in large numbers in many parts of the world, slightly buried in the sand in shallow coastal waters, and are frequently tossed ashore after storms.
